Upgrading from general admission to premium seating on Maui costs $34 to $60 more per adult and buys table placement, not a different meal. At The Lu'au at Grand Wailea the Ali'i Premium upgrade is $60 per adult and $30 per child over standard. At Huaka'i Luau, VIP is $33.88 more per adult. The menu, the bar and the show are identical at both tiers at every venue we list.

What does each seating tier actually include?

General admission gets you a seat, the full dinner service and the full show. Premium or VIP moves that seat closer to the stage and, at some venues, moves your check-in earlier. Nothing about the menu or the bar changes between tiers at the Maui luaus we list. Sugar Beach is the outlier with no tiers at all: seating is open lawn and you bring your own chair or blanket.

Is the Maui luau seating upgrade worth it?

Think of it as paying for the view, not the value. For two adults at The Lu'au at Grand Wailea, the Ali'i Premium upgrade adds $120 to the evening before tax and service charge, and every plate and pour is the same as the standard tier. That is money well spent on an anniversary or a once-in-a-trip evening, and money you can put toward dinner elsewhere if you are mainly there for the buffet. Our Grand Wailea premium vs standard breakdown goes tier by tier for that one venue.

Which luaus seat you at a private table?

The Lu'au at Grand Wailea seats both standard and Ali'i Premium guests at their own private table overlooking Wailea Beach, with a three-course family-style feast served to the table. A minimum of two guests is required, and parties larger than eight need to contact the venue directly. That table format is why it is a common pick for couples, and it is on our best luaus for couples shortlist.

What does VIP get you besides the view?

Time. At Myths of Maui, VIP check-in is 30 minutes ahead of general admission, 5:15 PM from April through August and 5:00 PM from September through March. Earlier entry means a shorter line at the welcome drink, first pick of photos with the ocean behind you and a calmer start before the property fills. At Huaka'i Luau the VIP tier is about placement for the oceanfront stage sightline rather than an earlier door.

When should you skip the upgrade?

  • You are feeding a family and the buffet is the point, since the menu is identical at both tiers.
  • You are booking well ahead, when standard tables at most venues are still close to the stage.
  • You want the lowest total for the night. Put the difference toward the price gap between venues instead, using our Maui luau cost guide.
